Workforce
Posted at March 7, 2007 12:52 PM - Category: A Small Orange
Hiring people takes a lot of work. Luckily, I've got Anthony who just joined us and Mike who will be starting next week. But it's still going to take a few weeks for them to get up to full speed, so they're essentially dead weight at the moment (not their fault! it's a confusing job at first). But they both seem like sharp guys, so we should be cranking out some serious ticket action very soon.
Now, I've got a job for you, the reader. Tell me what this song is and I'll pay out in free months of credit for your hosting (if you're not with ASO, payment will be in kudos). Seriously. It's been bugging the crap out of me. It's from an Adult Swim bump (hence the echo from my recording). First person to get a track title wins.

Lost
Posted at August 17, 2006 01:07 PM - Category: A Small Orange
I've officially given the most appropriate Lost-related name to one of our servers. I set up a new monitoring server to watch and eventually self-heal our servers. I've named it The Pearl
Runner up goes to our backup NAS which will be named The Monster
I'm such a dork for having so much fun with this.

Emily is on vacation in Key West this week. So, I'm alone. Well, there's Hockey, so it's not so bad...
Also, just so people know, VPS servers are being held up by a power crunch at the new DC. They've had people move in even faster than they expected, so they've filled up the current transformer to capacity. The new one arrived yesterday and they should have it all connected with all the panels set up by late next week and we'll have more circuits the week after that. I've got our 2nd rack anchored in and will be getting our PDUs ready sometime next week. Should be good to go very soon. Since we've got a billion people waiting on these things, we're probably going to have to take orders at a slow rate. We can only do a max of 20 VPS servers per machine (we really don't oversell!), so it may take a while to get to everyone. Just a heads up for those already waiting.
Datacentering

Eek! 2 weeks without a post. Definitely not how I wanted this blog to turn out, but hopefully I can turn that around.
The main reason for such disparity in my posting times is the new datacenter. We've got some interesting things going on and coming up. Tomorrow the first 2 of 4 new VPS servers will be showing up. So, I'll be having fun with setting up and running Virtuozzo. It means we'll be cutting out about 1/4 of our BIG bill from ThePlanet every month. Enough so that I can actually hire someone with all that money.
Speaking of cost savings, I hope to start migrating shared customers out of ThePlanet starting this month. I'll be starting with Beta and Gamma, combining the two into a server I've decided will be called The Hatch (I was thinking The Swan, but that sounds kind of fruity). I'll also be working on getting our existing company server migrated over to Atlanta NAP. I'm planning on calling that one the Pala Ferry. Oh, such fun with the naming. After that, it's on to 22 customer machines. Not so fun...
Going back to the hiring of a new person, I intend for that to be a developer. I really want to get kicking on this clustering project, but I can't devote enough time to have it done this decade. I'd like to start that this year, if possible. It's something I'd really like to do and would solve a LOT of our headaches. There'd be no limit to how big a site could be and there would be no worries of inappropriate pricing, no big jumps between shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting, better density of our servers, less support headaches, and all sorts of really nice things. We just have to get it out of my brain and into the servers. Simple, I hope...
Also, Thom Yorke's new album is very good. Go forth and purchase.
Colocationing
Posted at May 16, 2006 04:56 PM - Category: A Small Orange
I visited the AtlantaNAP facility today, and it's looking pretty nice. I'll admit that when I first walked up, it looks like they were nowhere near finishing, but that's because I was looking at the office space and the various construction materials strewn about. To be honest, they are actually quite close to being done (as they've said, of course). The paint is still drying on the office spaces, but they just need to get rid of the masking tape and mats, and sweep the floor to really be done with that portion.
The colo space is almost ready for us. The cage dude will be installing them next week and we'll be moving in our racks on Thursday. Power will be installed shortly afterwards, since it has to be physically attacked to the actual rack (well, technically it doesn't need to be, but it's much nicer to have it that way). The network should be live in the facility in a few days and power was turned up a few hours before I arrived, so it's almost all there. The AC units were being worked on, but are getting hooked up soon. We should be live before June 1st.
They actually have to meet that date because there is some unnamed search engine going into a cage across from us by then. I asked for the name, but Jeff wasn't able to tell me. I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out once they actually start installing stuff in there. But I do know it's someone I'd recognize. I'm guessing Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN, or Google, since that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Don't worry, I'll be getting pictures :P
Finally!
