Datacentering

Eek! 2 weeks without a post. Definitely not how I wanted this blog to turn out, but hopefully I can turn that around.
The main reason for such disparity in my posting times is the new datacenter. We've got some interesting things going on and coming up. Tomorrow the first 2 of 4 new VPS servers will be showing up. So, I'll be having fun with setting up and running Virtuozzo. It means we'll be cutting out about 1/4 of our BIG bill from ThePlanet every month. Enough so that I can actually hire someone with all that money.
Speaking of cost savings, I hope to start migrating shared customers out of ThePlanet starting this month. I'll be starting with Beta and Gamma, combining the two into a server I've decided will be called The Hatch (I was thinking The Swan, but that sounds kind of fruity). I'll also be working on getting our existing company server migrated over to Atlanta NAP. I'm planning on calling that one the Pala Ferry. Oh, such fun with the naming. After that, it's on to 22 customer machines. Not so fun...
Going back to the hiring of a new person, I intend for that to be a developer. I really want to get kicking on this clustering project, but I can't devote enough time to have it done this decade. I'd like to start that this year, if possible. It's something I'd really like to do and would solve a LOT of our headaches. There'd be no limit to how big a site could be and there would be no worries of inappropriate pricing, no big jumps between shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting, better density of our servers, less support headaches, and all sorts of really nice things. We just have to get it out of my brain and into the servers. Simple, I hope...
